Google Currents: First Impressions Of Google’s Flipboard Competitor

Google has just launched its much-rumored Flipboard competitor, Google Currents. The service is available for both iOS and Android — including support for phones and tablets — and you can download it right here. But only if you’re in the US (sorry international readers).

The gist of Currents is simple: it’s a clean, touch-friendly way to consume your favorite blogs and news sites on your phone and/or tablet. And it looks good — much better, in fact, than most of Google’s other applications.

After installing the app, you’ll see icons for a handful of pre-selected publications like 500px and The Daily Beast. Currents will immediately begin downloading the most recent articles from these sources, and you’ll also be prompted to add additional publications to your Library (including TechCrunch, should that suit your fancy — we’re an initial launch partner).

If you’re using a large enough display (in other words, a tablet), Currents will display large photo banners that help lend a magazine vibe to the app. Aside from these, the app is broken into two main sections of content: Library and Trending. The former is where content from the publications you’ve opted to follow will show up , and the app will proactively download that content so you can read it offline.

The Trending tab displays the hottest stories across the web, broken down by category and drawn from a variety of sources. The default section is called simply ‘Top Stories’, and you can add additional topic-specific lists including Technology, Business, and World News.

But while Currents has been discussed as a Flipboard competitor — and it is, in the sense that it gives you an attractive way to browse your favorite sites — this initial release has relatively little integration with social networks like Twitter and Facebook, which are Flipboard’s bread and butter. At this point Currents will let you share with any social apps you have installed (as you can with most Android apps). But you can’t connect with Twitter or Facebook to view posts shared by your friends within Currents itself. Another way to put it: at this point, it doesn’t feel terribly social.

That said, Google says it plans to roll out more social features down the line, so this may come eventually. Of course, the fact that Google omitted them from this release may indicate that it’s more interested in driving people to Google+.

Here are some of my other early impressions (I’ll be adding more as I spend more time with Currents):

  • I’ve toyed with the app on three devices so far: A Nexus One, Galaxy Nexus, and a Galaxy Tab 10.1. The app looks great on the tablet, and works well on the Galaxy Nexus, too. It’s pretty clunky on the Nexus One, particularly when I try to browse content while the app is downloading other articles in the background.
  • Reading content housed in the Library section is a pleasant experience. You can flick left and right to progress through a story (or, if you’re reading the last bit of a story, to jump to the next one), and you can hit a Menu icon to see headlines and brief excerpts of recent stories from the same publication. I could definitely see myself using this on a regular basis, particularly on Android devices where Flipboard isn’t yet available. The fact that there are no ads helps.
  • Reading content in the Trending section isn’t nearly as nice. After tapping on one of the trending topics, you’ll be presented with several relevant articles from different publications. Tap one of these, and you’ll see the story’s excerpt — but not the full article. You see, many of these publishers aren’t content partners on Currents yet, and Google can’t simply scrape all of their content. So, instead of being able to read these articles within the app’s native UI, you need to tap a button that says ‘See Original Article’. This will open the article in a browser pane, which includes the full text (and ads) from the article, as if you’d browsed to it from the web. Google doesn’t really have any other choice here, but it’s a buzzkill, especially because, unlike the content in your Library section, Currents doesn’t pre-fetch these articles so it needs to pause for a moment to download them.
  • Google will be allowing publishers to sell premium content through the app, though I can’t find any yet.
  • Currents doesn’t have as many visual flourishes (like page-turn animations) as Flipboard does. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, though. I’m actually finding Currents easier to get the hang of, particularly comparing phone-sized version of Currents with the new iPhone Flipboard app that just came out.
  • Update: After playing with the app more on the Galaxy Nexus, I’ve found that Currents definitely has some performance issues. It seems to hesitate a bit at times when I flick to the next page of an article, and twice now I’ve had it get slow as I left the app (the Android homescreen took a few seconds to pop in). That said, the issues aren’t deal-breakers, they’re just a little annoying.

Oil, gas industry leaders talk technology, future in the Eagle Ford Shale

CORPUS CHRISTI - Texas Railroad Commissioner David Porter said the Eagle Ford Shale could provide “the single most economic development in our state’s history,” last week.

Porter made the comments Thursday at a luncheon hosted by the Texas Alliance of Drilling Producers, which focused on increasing communication between industry groups and highlighting issues affecting one of the hottest oil and gas plays in the world.

Porter’s Texas Railroad Commission is the state agency that regulates the oil and gas industry, and his lunchtime address followed a series of presentations in the morning that covered the future of energy, water issues, air permitting, and technological advances in the field.

The day-long event was meant to build networks of communication, but also highlighted the impact of the Eagle Ford Shale, and the technology that continues to drive one of the world’s most high-tech industries.

“Texas continues to set the tone for the nation on oil and gas policy,” Porter said. “I am pleased to stand up here and say something everyone in this room already knows… that things are looking good here in South Texas.”

A “Task” For the Future

Porter told the group at last week’s “Challenges in the Eagle Ford” conference where we are today: At a point where oil and gas drilling in the Eagle Ford Shale is providing 13,000 full-time jobs and more than $500 million in salaries.

He projected that the jobs number will grow to approximately 70,000 full-time positions by 2020, and said that his office is working to put together a group to be known as the “Eagle Ford Task Force,” to ensure that regulations keep up with the growing oil and gas boom.

Communication, Porter said, will be key to ensuring that the Eagle Ford boom does not repeat mistakes made during the Barnett Shale boom of the 1980s and 1990s.

The Eagle Ford Shale Task Force will be comprised of 16-20 members representing industry, local community leaders, elected officials, water representatives, landowners/property rights representatives, local businesses, and environmental groups. The group’s charge will be to (1) open the lines of communication between all parties, (2) establish best practices for developing the Eagle Ford Shale, and (3) promote economic benefits locally and statewide.

“I’m confident we are going to have the right people keeping us ahead of the pressing issues,” Porter said. “One of the biggest problems we ran into in the Barnett Shale is that no one was listening to each other. If we all keep working together, we’re not going to have that problem down here.”

“The First Three Years”

As Porter finished off his keynote address with more positive predictions for the oil and gas industry’s impact on the Texas Economy, Richard Stoneburner, president and COO of PetroHawk, took to the podium to tell the story of how it all began.

It had been long known that the Eagle Ford Shale held incredible promise for oil and gas discovery, but it was the evolution of horizontal drilling techniques that led to major activity in the summer of 2008.

PetroHawk spudded its first well in July of 2008, and in just three years, the Eagle Ford Shale has grown into the eighth-largest oil and gas field in the world.

“It was really a remarkable series of events in a compressed time frame to produce a world-class field,” Stoneburner said. “We just happened to find the first commercial discovery.”

Stoneburner said that PetroHawk targeted the Eagle Ford based on its significance as regional source rock. In the first quarter of 2008, PetroHawk mapped the shale formation across the Gulf Coast and identified it as “anomalously thick, porous and highly resistive.”

After the word was out, a land rush began in late 2009 and production has grown to 750 million bcf (billion cubic feet) per day in approximately three years. Stoneburner said the composition of the Eagle Ford Shale is what has allowed it to grow so rapidly.

“Every single inch of that rock is gas-bearing, permeable and producing,” Stoneburner said. “This is not your average shale… I have not seen another shale anywhere like it. This, in my opinion, is the premiere area in the country.”

“The Single-most High Tech Industry in Texas”

Morning presentations at the “Challenges in Eagle Ford” conference varied in topics, but the common theme of technology permeated each speech.

“The oil and has industry is probably the single-most high tech industry in the United States,” oil and gas attorney John Hays said.

“The shale play itself is based on technology,” COMM Engineering USA president Bill Schnieder said.

Schneider and COMM Engineering vice president Brian Boyer teamed up on a presentation about air permitting compliance – and ways to turn compliance into profits.

Processing facilities produce volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) issues permits based on the amount of VOCs a processing facility produces.

Those facilities can obtain a “permit by rule” if they produce less than 25 tons of VOCs per year, which requires less regulation than the “standard permit requirements” needed for producers of higher levels of VOCs.

COMM Engineering encouraged all producers to shoot for the “permit by rule,” and has developed technologies to increase profits through recapturing vented gasses. The company’s Vapor Recovery Towers and Vapor Balancing for truck loading are both vapor recovery solutions that capture vapors that would escape into the atmosphere and recapture them for processing.

In the Eagle Ford Shale, this vent gas measures out as high as 3,000 BTUs. The national average is approximately 1,000 BTUs.

“This is the richest gas in your facility, and it’s escaping,” Schneider said. “It is truly profitable with today’s technologies to recover this product.”

Schneider presented figures that showed Vapor Recovery Towers costing an initial $120,000 investment, and showing a return of more than $700,000 per year in product recovery. He also said the Vapor Balancing for truck loading, which routes vapors back to storage, can have a significant impact on air permitting requirements.

“In a lot of cases, simply doing that can keep you under 25 tons per year,” Schneider said.

Reuben Cantu of Champion Technologies addressed chemical issues in the Eagle Ford Shale, including build-up of paraffin (wax) in pipes and the geographic characterization of oil in the area.

He said there are essentially two types of oil being drilled out of the shale, a black crude being found in the lower parts of the formation, and all the rest. Cantu described northeastern parts of the formation producing a darker oil with less severe build-ups of wax.

“Hot watering” is his company’s preferred method of mitigating the problem, and he also mentioned build-up of bacteria in pipes as another issue Champion Technologies works to solve. Increasing knowledge of the product will be an ongoing issue as production in the Eagle Ford continues.

“We are trying to gain an understanding chemically of the types of crudes we’re dealing with,” Cantu said.

Energy – Past, Present, and Future

Oil and gas attorney John Hays opened Thursday’s “Challenges in the Eagle Ford” conference by putting today’s energy needs in a historical perspective. He said early humans produced energy with their bodies, and described the evolution of outside energy sources from draft animals to wind energy to the steam engine, which he described as the “first move towards modern economy.”

In 2009, the supply source of domestic energy was composed of 35 percent petroleum, 23 percent natural gas, 20 percent coal, 7.7 percent renewable energy, and 8.3 percent nuclear, according to the 2009 Annual Energy Review.

Projections for 2035 show the percentages for oil and liquids, natural gas and coal growing, according to Hays.

“They consistently show energy in all sectors increasing in supply,” Hays said. “That’s why those that say we need to subsidize renewables don’t really know what they’re talking about.”

Hays was critical of solar and wind energy, saying that wind energy technology has not evolved to a point where it can operate efficiently without being augmented by other sources, and that solar projects have not proven cost effective.

He cited the example of ancient ships that utilized sails, but also human-powered oars as early examples of lack of efficiency.

“People speak about wind energy as glamorous, exciting, clean, like it’s something we didn’t have before,” Hays said. “Even back then they knew they would have to have some back-up system to augment wind energy.”

The future of energy will depend highly on water, an issue that both Railroad Commissioner David Porter and John Burke of Burke & Associates, LLC, advised producers to watch carefully.

The average well requires approximately 119,050 barrels of water per year, according to Burke, an amount that could provide water for 92 people for a year.

He said that those numbers, however striking, pale in comparison to other uses.

“You need to get the story out that even though you’re using this water, compared to agricultural and municipal uses, it’s not as much as it appears to be.”

Burke recommended working with local cities and municipalities to purchase effluent, like one oil company already has done with the City of Gonzales, and to utilize brackish water for as many projects as possible.

“The more you can use brackish water to frack with, the less you’re going to hear from people,” he said.

Moving Forward

Texas Alliance of Energy Producers Chairman Tom Taylor spoke briefly at many times during the course of the day-long presentation, and continued to make the point that communication is key as the oil and gas boom in South Texas continues.

Forty percent of oil and gas in use today has been discovered in the last five years, according to Taylor, and the Eagle Ford Shale boom that is estimated to last anywhere from 15 to 40 years should continue to play a big role.

“We wanted Texas to set an example for all the other states… we’ve been doing fracking for 40 years and the technology keeps improving,” Taylor said.

Porter hopes that the economics will keep improving as well.

“We have an incredible opportunity at hand to better the Texas economy,” Porter said. “We must ensure that Texas remains in control and regulating… and establish Texas as a national economic powerhouse. Let’s keep it that way.”

Install Android Emulator di PC

Pada kesempatan kali ini penulis akan menunjukkan cara adalah menginstall Android Emulator di PC. OS yang digunakan adalah Windows. Bagi yang belum tahu, Android adalah plaftform OS Smartphone besutan Google yang sekarang lagi naik daun. Berikut langkah-langkah nya :

1. Download SDK Manager Android di : http://developer.android.com/sdk/ Kita memerlukannya untuk menjalankan emulator Android

2. Buka browser dan masuk ke alamat http://dl-ssl.google.com/android/repository/repository.xml

3. Cari versi Android Platform yang ingin diinstall. Disini penulis menggunakan versi 2.3 (Gingerbread). Tekan tombol Ctrl+F,ketik 2.2 untuk mencari versi Android yang dimaksud. Platform lain yang tersedia adalah 2.3, 1.6, dan 1.5


Disini,karena kita menggunakan Windows,maka kita memilih os windows. Pilih atau sorot tulisan android-2.2_r02-windows.zip, kemudian copy.

4. Paste yang tlah kita copy tadi (android-2.2_r02-windows.zip) setelah url http://dl-ssl.google.com/android/repository/ sehingga url nya menjadi http://dl-ssl.google.com/android/repository/android-2.2_r02-windows.zip. Kita akan mendownload file tersebut.

5. Setelah mendownload kedua file tersebut (SDK Manager dan android-2.2_r02-windows.zip), maka kita sudah bisa menginstall Android Emulator tanpa harus terkoneksi ke internet.

6. Extract android-sdk_r06-windows.zip dan android-2.2_r02-windows.zip.

7. Copy atau cut semua files didalam android-2.2_r02-windows folder.

8. Masuk ke …\android-sdk_r06-windows\android-sdk-windows\platforms dan buat sebuah folder baru (Nama terserah kita. Disini penulis menggunakan nama android 2.2)

9. Paste semua folder dan files yang telah kita copy ke dalam folder ini (dalam postingan ini android 2.2)

10. Jalankan …\android-sdk_r06-windows\android-sdk-windows\SDK Setup.exe

11. The SDK and AVD Manager will autodetect the SDK Platform.

12. Pilih Virtual Devices dan klik New untuk membuat android virtual device.

13. Sebuah window baru akan muncul , beri nama device, pilih target, set kapasitas SD card, pilih skin. Klik Create AVD untuk membuat device.

14. Klik Start untuk membuat virtual device. Harap bersabar karena proses ini berlangsung agak lama,sekitar 15-20 menit,tergantung spesifikasi komputer.

Emerging Technology Adoption Trends Study

A little over a year after the introduction of the Apple iPad, nine out of every 10 organizations in North America with 50 or more employees are in some stage of adopting tablets for employee use. And three in 10 organizations are specifically in the testing or piloting stage--more than for any other new technology we asked about in the CIO Insight 2011 Emerging Technology Adoption Trends Study.

We know that, in a certain sense, tablets aren’t exactly “emerging.” Tablet PCs have been around for years, even if we only mark the introduction of the Microsoft Tablet PC platform as a starting point. But since the current definition of “tablet” refers to the form factor, operating system approach and connectivity model of the iPad—and since, in our survey, we were able to make this distinction clear—we’re confident in being able to say that tablets represent one of the fastest-growing new technologies we’ve ever measured.

The CIO Insight 2011 Emerging Technology Adoption Trends Study was fielded from Sept. 6 to Oct. 7, 2011. A random selection from corporate parent Ziff Davis Enterprise’s lists of readers and site visitors were invited by e-mail to participate in the online study. The survey was completed by 382 respondents involved in new technology acquisition in organizations with 50 or more employees; each respondent was asked which of 41 emerging technologies their
organization is currently using, testing, or investigating, and what benefits they were expecting from this activity. The survey also asked about current use and experienced benefits of a smaller list of recently emergent but better-established technologies.

Unified communications (UC) is also surging this year—at last. In our 2010 study, roughly one out of four organizations with 50 or more employees showed no interest in UC. This year, that’s dropped to only about one in six. Even more notable, the percent of respondents who are actively testing or piloting UC rose from 18 percent to 27 percent. What’s interesting about this is that it clearly shows an acceleration in adoption of UC, both in the number of organizations
using it and in the scale of their UC deployments.

The same can be said of IPv6 and location-based applications: current testing levels are historically high for both of these—though for completely different reasons, of course. IPv6 is a required evolution in the structure and functioning of the Internet that has essentially been put off as long as it can be at this point. So organizations are, by necessity, looking to begin deployments. The interest in location-based applications, on the other hand, is really the result of a maturing in our capacity to understand how much more can be done (beyond just providing maps or coupons) with the knowledge of where a worker or
customer is. The disparate reasons for their emergence notwithstanding, IPv6 and location-based applications are two technologies that are likely to show accelerated adoption in the months and years to come.

Not so for private clouds, however, even though it ranks No. 3 on our most-emergent list this year. It achieves this position because its adoption rate is strong, with roughly as many respondents testing (25 percent) as currently using (24 percent) private clouds. But private clouds are probably past the accelerated growth stage at this point, as firms now understand the opportunity and benefits involved and are just extending their already aggressive approaches. With private clouds, what we see is strong—but not accelerated—growth.

Predictive analytics—an extension of the wave of business intelligence adoption that’s been sweeping through the enterprise since mid-2010—is also a strong-but-steady emerging area. Improved and increased data sources and “mass-market” use of BI reporting, such as from Web analytics or marketing-automation applications, are creating a host of new opportunities for businesses. But, in point
of fact, what we are seeing here is more a continuation of a high activity level rather than an increase in that activity.

Wireless services branded as “4G,” however, might represent a different situation. So far as high-speed wide-area data communication goes, 4G is almost by definition the only game in town, as alternatives such as WiMAX (also touted as a 4G-caliber option) and regional or “muni” Wi-Fi have not caught on. Given the increasing focus of the enterprise on mobile distribution of applications and data, clearly it’s been necessary to address wireless bandwidth. And in this, 4G excels. That said, however, the availability, usability, and (especially) power issues associated with 4G might be giving organizations pause—not enough to take 4G off our list of most-emergent technologies for the second year in a row, but enough to keep growth from
accelerating, particularly as some reassess the return on their 4G investment.

In addition to exploring the market-based factors in the adoption of emerging technology, one of the key features of our Emerging Technology study year after year is the attention we pay to the business benefits that are driving interest in and deployments of the latest and greatest in IT. Whatever the economic conditions, your organization is probably pursuing all three goals of profitability, versatility and growth—at least for different initiatives—and our survey can show you pretty clearly which new technologies are likely to be best for achieving each of these goals.

This is especially true of the more-established technologies we asked survey respondents about (those that are relatively new, but not new enough to call “emerging”). For example, you might not associate an application infrastructure technology such as service-oriented architecture (SOA) with business growth. But it seems that in the era of distributed computing, big data and mobile applications, the interoperability that SOA provides means opportunities for the initiatives running on them. More respondents cited this as promoting business growth than any other of the more-established technologies we asked about.

Using the study, we also get a real understanding of what’s driving certain technologies in today’s business climate. Cost savings are a particular benefit organizations have experienced from storage virtualization, cloud-based storage, and desktop Linux; but for storage virtualization and Linux at least, the benefit is definitely not business growth.

Neither is it business versatility, a benefit closely related to cost-savings. Business versatility has risen in importance recently as companies understand that the ability to react quickly to market conditions and opportunities is one of the chief protections they have against business risk. Here is where smartphones, in particular, show promise. And to understand the adoption of esoteric technological areas such as enterprise search or grid computing, look to the need for business versatility.

After all, the reasons for technological progress are
benefits-based. We didn’t jump on tablets because the iPad happened to have a particular feature set, any more than we jumped on virtualization because VMware’s ESX Server 3.0 had achieved a particular performance level. Both tablets and virtualization had been around for years. What made these emergent was the swiftness of the market’s reaction, once it began in earnest, to the alignment of these technologies with broadly held business needs.

So it’s not surprising to see that tablets are recognized as helping with all three major business goals today. This is what is making them such a hotly developing area of IT. This “cure-all” image is driving UC and private clouds as well. But, inversely, you might find real benefits even from technologies that are considered niche (at least for now). Some examples include video VoIP if you seek more flexibility in your operations or service offerings, or user self-service if you want to manage IT costs. Our detailed and comprehensive approach to emerging technology aims to help you understand and justify the most visible trends, as well as to help you identify the hidden gems.

Business Technology

Business technology encompasses a wide range of hardware, software and services that keep companies running and enhance operations. Technology plays into every aspect of a business, from accounting to customer communications to product design and development. The rapid forward movement in technology development over the last couple of decades has provided more powerful and less expensive options for companies. Business technology can help small business look bigger than they are and keep them ahead in a competitive marketplace.

Hardware

The most visible sector of small business technology is the hardware--the desktop computers, laptops, printers, monitors, cell phones, projectors, servers, digital cameras, keyboards and "mice" that keep a business going on a daily basis. Laptops, an increasingly popular computer hardware option for business users, are more mobile than ever. Budget-conscious small businesses often purchase consumer hardware rather than enterprise hardware, but many manufacturers offer products designed specifically for small business users.

Software

Software covers everything from the operating system that a computer runs on to image editing programs, accounting software and word processing applications. Most businesses run on either a Windows or Macintosh platform. Macs are particularly popular with entrepreneurs who deal with multimedia and video creation. Most businesses use an office productivity software suite such as Microsoft Office or openoffice.org that includes word processing, presentation and database programs that handle a wide array of common business tasks. Business software also includes more specialized programs such as CAD design tools for architects and recording software for audio engineers.

Internet

The growth of the Internet has marked a sea change in small business technology. Businesses use websites to advertise, provide information, sell products and reach new customers. Software as a Service (SAAS) is software that is delivered in an ongoing fashion over the web rather than through CDs or downloads. Often it is paid for in a monthly or yearly service plan. This can be a more affordable and flexible option for small businesses compared to traditional methods of purchasing and using software.

Specialized Technology

Business technology isn't limited to uses surrounding desktop and laptop computers. Technology also makes a mark with high-tech manufacturing robots, advanced microscopes and other specialized hardware and software. Many tasks that used to be done by hand are now automated and handled by specialized technology tools. For example, an independent machine shop may use computer-aided manufacturing equipment that combines specialized software with machines to create parts to specifications. Innovative small businesses are also working in high-tech industries like nanotechnology and biotechnology and are on the cutting edge of creating new technologies.

Benefits

The smart use of business technology helps small companies stay ahead of the competition by improving communications, making employees more efficient and tapping into effective marketing channels. Small business owners are often pressed for time and wearing many different hats. The use of business tools like accounting software, email, customer relationship management applications and "smart phones" can take some of the burden off entrepreneurs and help them make the most effective use of their time. Up-and-coming generations of workers are accustomed to a world full of technology. Small businesses need to adapt and keep up with new advancements.
